Several bills affecting health care providers were introduced to the New York State Senate with the beginning of the new year. One of these bills will amend the Public Health Law to require that clinical laboratories report test results to patients upon request. The legislation is intended to allow patients to be informed participants in their own medical care. View the bill here. Another bill imposes new reporting requirements on hospitals, including a requirement to report the “death of a previously healthy person while undergoing medical care” to the Department of Health. The legislation is intended to establish a system for reporting medical harm events and protect patients from preventable harms, such as hospital-acquired infections. View the bill here.
