Use of Social Media in Disaster Relief Efforts

As of 2013, more than six billion people in the world’s developing nations have cell phone subscriptions. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies issued a report that addressed how humanitarian organizations can use technology in disaster relief efforts. Organizations may use smart phones to relay firsthand news from the location; to gather donations and organize medical supplies; and to upload medical advice to YouTube for doctors on location. The report stressed that humanitarian organizations have a continuing responsibility to ensure that resources are distributed fairly in a catastrophe.
