Militant Regimes Crush Polio Vaccination Efforts in Pakistan

Peshawar, Pakistan is the “largest reservoir of endemic polio viruses in the world.”[1] However, militant leaders, such as the Taliban, denounce health care professionals’ efforts to vaccinate residents, and have launched attacks on teams of individuals that struggle to administer vaccinations in areas that need them most. Since December 2012, over forty individuals have been killed in Pakistan while trying to distribute the polio vaccine. In addition, Reuters reported recently that there is a growing health care crisis in Pakistan because “years of conflict and displacement” crushed the health care system in the Northwest region of Pakistan.[2] Access to medical care is extremely limited, as many health care professionals do not want to practice in the region.[3]
