Global “Food Fraud” Epidemic

The discovery that horse meat had been substituted for beef in Europe was just the beginning of what some are calling a “food fraud” epidemic. Recently an organized crime group was caught creating a toxic brew of fake Glen’s vodka in England, and no one knows who ingested it or what damage is attributable to the distribution of the counterfeit product.

Investigators have discovered “thousands of frauds,” and Mitchell Weinberg, president and chief executive of Inscatech, an engineering consulting firm, claims that food fraud is occurring in every country that produces food. In addition, it is not only whole items that are at risk for counterfeit production, but also every ingredient “with even moderate economic value.”  Read the article here.
